Caldera by mike-nash Caldera by mike-nash
‘Caldera’ can be considered to be the name of the female depicted, but geographically a caldera is a cauldron-like volcanic feature formed by the collapse of land following a volcanic eruption. Imagine something volcanic and fiery causing sparks and black clouds of smoke and ash. My initial idea was to work with the fiery theme and create some kind of fire demon, djinn or genie.

Caldera is a Greek word and it means crater. Possibly of a volcano as you well mentioned but also used in any other geomorphical situations like narrow mountain passages...

That's really great, and certainly looks like it could belong in a D&D Fiend Folio :D I love the design, and it's creepy-ness. It reminds me a little bit of =One-Vox's angels, but not. Very effective!

He's well worth a watch :D Especially since he's done so much work for White Wolf, hehe. I love his style.

But this piece is every bit as creepy as anything he's painted, and amazingly well done at that! :aww:

I have to agree with others, looks stunning. The color change from red to blue works so well...and when I really like the design of the character, I can't think of anything bad to say.

Great piece, Mike! Your paintings just get better and better.

The character design is hideously lovely, and the brushwork is excellent. I particularly love the way the dress folds and loops off the figure, and how it descends into the volcanic jazz at the very bottom. The fact that the painting is so tall is also great, 'cause it plays off the idea of a volcanic fissure going from deep underground all the up to the lighted world. (FYI: the preview image doesn't do the composition justice. It's too tall to fit the entire thing on my screen without opening the image separately and zooming out.)

I've been trying to come up with some constructive criticism, and all I could think of was that maybe her right arm reads a little bit flat. The hands are perfect, though, and are held in a very effective way: ostensibly relaxed, but poised and sinister.

Tell me about it, the forearm has been a nightmare. I know exactly what you mean - shall attempt to improve it.

Yep the preview image ended up huge! I think it's because it's so narrow. I'll try and solve the problem and get the preview to fit on screen all in one piece.
