Artist's Comments

I've decided to start uploading my sketches. Normally these things stay in my A4 sketchbook and never make it onto the net. But I thought it'd be good to show a bit of variety and not just fill my gallery with finished artwork.

This sketch is purely for ideas. Concept art I guess. Drawing different arms, claws, heads etc. I already have an idea for the final composition and tomorrow I'll start drawing the large scale version, probably on A2 paper, before scanning it and painting it in Photoshop.

It's pretty much all pencil drawn, but I did tidy it up with a quick bit of photoshop.

Hope you like it. :aww:

Wow...looks amazing.
I really like the look of the dragon, and I'm looking forward for the large scale version.

i think its almost more impressive as a sketch because it gives it an intriguing quality and depth to the piece that would be more likely focused on a single figure if it were a finished piece.

Thank you. It's good to see the creation process, it's a different perspective on an image. In fact, once i'd drawn the heads next to each other like that it made me think of the Hydra and maybe giving the dragon more than one head. So rough sketches like this help spark ideas that weren't thought of initially. I'm one of those artists that doesn't have a perfectly formed vision before I start drawing, it tends to develop organically...plus a bit of luck. So keeping a sketchbook, despite my final images being digital, has become quite important to the way I work.

Also, for me, finding the right sketchbook is so important! I've bought loads but so many of them don't feel right - sounds silly. I'm currently using a hardback sketchbook with a fake crocodile skin cover, love it, it's like dragon scales and feels great to draw in.

that sounds awesome, I need a sketchbook like that, personally the two heads made me think of a new hatchling with its mothers tail curled protectively around; mainly due to the difference in the size of the heads.

I'd never thought of it like that, but now you've pointed it out - seems so obvious. Thanks for that :)
