Red Death - Sketch by mike-nash Red Death - Sketch by mike-nash
So after roughly two years since Uni, I've decided to revisit The Masque of the Red Death. (addiction!)

If you haven't read the story, you should! Go Google it immediately, the image will make more sense to you then.

This sketch is Step 1 of a Work In Progress, I plan to colour it digitally, fix errors and add a background etc. I'll be sure to retain the traditional medium/hand-drawn quality.

Amazing...I love the style of death as a skinned body instead of simply bones. Lovely details...

Nice!
Amazing work with the muscles and the robe, as well as all the details.
Same goes with the shading, which creates both creepy and mysterious mood.

I really have to read the story now...

Great piece, Mike. The lighting is exquisite. Knowing some of your other pieces, I can imagine how your colors will actually enhance the already creepy mood.

Take that, rich people! This is incredible by the way - I'm not sure you even need to color it, it looks wonderful as is. Did you use any references for the body/cloth?

It's important for an image to look good in black & white. The grey tones serve as a solid base ready for the colour. I'll play around with some colours and see what happens, if I find it looks best in B&W I'll leave it alone. :aww:

Yes, I always use reference as a starting point. I spent at least an hour looking stupid in a white bed sheet. Although, just for the record, I'm not as tall and I have skin...

Oh, and the dagger started life as a wooden ruler.

That is awesome! I really love the detail and shading in this, all those muscles must've taken ages to draw!

Kudos to you for that!
