Every morning the two ravens Huginn and Muninn, are loosed and fly over Midgard. They travel as spies across the world collecting news and information, with which they return to their master Odin at dusk and whisper to him the events of the day.

When translated ‘Huginn’ becomes Thought and ‘Muninn’ becomes Memory.

The message within the tale is to be like these ravens and pass on the thoughts and memories that we accumulate over the years. Thus preventing our stories, achievements and teachings from being forgotten. Note how Odin himself expresses how he fears the loss of Memory the most.

Old Norse:
Huginn ok Muninn fliúga hverian dag
iörmungrund yfir;
óomk ek of Huginn, at hann aptr ne komit,
þó siámk meirr um Muninn.

English:
The whole world wide, every day,
fly Hugin and Munin;
I worry lest Hugin should fall in flight,
yet more I fear for Munin.

Hope you all like this image, took me longer than expected to finish! It was a love/hate relationship too, some days I really struggled to make any decent progress, but then other days were great fun. Just the way art goes I guess. Anyway, I'm finally satisfied with the result and I learnt quite a bit too.

Update:
I decided to paint the ravens as Albino (white). I couldn’t find any official description stating that Huginn and Muninn are supposed to be black Ravens; people just assume they are - So I decided to be different. Besides I feel white symbolises thoughts and memories better, it’s more melancholy.

The sunset and night sky suggest the idea of time, which is important to the story. The colours illustrate the darkness of losing your mind, but also the soothing comfort of memories.

bat's are my friends :)
Amazing piece all in all, I also like the slight surrealistic touch on it. Great work :)
It's really cool how you made the ravens look so dark and sinister almost literally by lighting them up- hardly any black (or the dark purplish sheen that ravens have). The dark reds really help to visualize the pits of the earth, be it hell or a violent volcano, while the blue glow they're flying up to seems very comforting in contrast. Overall this is really amazing, with amazing manipulation of light to create an effect, perfect for Huginn and Muninn in my opinion.
I actually forgot to add this to the image description, but I decided that the ravens should be Albino (white). I couldn't find any official description stating that Huginn and Muninn are BLACK Ravens; people just assume they are - So I decided to be a little bit different, hehe. I'm really glad you like it and thank you for spending the time to write such a thoughtful comment.

Actually now that you mention it I notice that the ravens are albino(no clue why I didn't see that before)and it does seem to fit them better. It just fits I guess, that much more mysterious and unique. I dunno, maybe they bring knowledge(can't think of English expression to support this but I know it works in German) or something. It really does add to the piece-that much more original and your piece of art. Very interesting, unique but fitting take on a classic myth. I really could use you in my world-lit class I think =p. Anywho, very amazing painting; simply breathtaking. For something this great I simply could not fav and run.
i love this picture.. but there not ravens.. there crows.. j4tr
They have ended up looking too crow-like haven't they? I think somewhere during the painting of light shining through the feathers etc, the head shape and gullet plumage slimmed down too much. Once I get some free time I'll correct it. Thanks for alerting me too that.
